چکیده
Anticorruption awareness raising efforts are designed to encourage citizens resist and report corruption but have been found either not work or unwanted effects—including increasing bribe payment. This article represents the first test of whether these also undermine critical aspects a society's social contract, namely, willingness pay tax. Using household level survey experiment in Lagos, Nigeria, we assess exposure five messages about (anti)corruption influence citizens' belief that they duty taxes, “tax morale”. Though were different tone content, four undermined tax morale. We argue this is likely because anti-corruption raise risks, hence concerns taxes will be wasted. In turn, highlights new potential unintended consequence policy interventions focus on government failings.
